Geography
New Philadelphia is located at 40°43′14″N 76°7′2″W / 40.72056°N 76.11722°W (40.720594, -76.117295)[1], approximately 70 miles (110 km) northwest of the city of Philadelphia.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 1.5 square miles (3.9 km2), all of it land.
Demographics
As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 1,149 people, 507 households, and 311 families residing in the borough. The population density was 772.9 people per square mile (297.7/km²). There were 585 housing units at an average density of 393.5 per square mile (151.6/km²). The racial makeup of the borough was 99.30% White, 0.52% Asian, and 0.17% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.35% of the population.
There were 507 households out of which 24.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.0% were married couples living together, 11.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 38.5% were non-families. 35.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 22.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.26 and the average family size was 2.96.
In the borough the population was spread out with 21.2% under the age of 18, 5.7% from 18 to 24, 26.5% from 25 to 44, 23.8% from 45 to 64, and 22.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were 98.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.1 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $27,159, and the median income for a family was $38,229. Males had a median income of $29,107 versus $20,192 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $17,899. About 6.3% of families and 10.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including 17.0% of those under age 18 and 13.3% of those age 65 or over.
In 2000, 20.8% of New Philadelphia residents identified as being of Lithuanian heritage. This was the highest percentage of Lithuanian Americans in the country.
