West Chillisquaque Township is a township in Northumberland County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 2,846 at the 2000 census.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 13.9 square miles (35.9 km²), of which, 12.9 square miles (33.5 km²) of it is land and 0.9 square miles (2.4 km²) of it (6.64%) is water.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 2,846 people, 1,211 households, and 830 families residing in the township. The population density was 220.1 people per square mile (85.0/km²). There were 1,284 housing units at an average density of 99.3/sq mi (38.3/km²). The racial makeup of the township was 98.28% White, 0.56% African American, 0.14% Native American, 0.14% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 0.35% from other races, and 0.46% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.42% of the population.

There were 1,211 households out of which 26.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.1% were married couples living together, 9.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.4% were non-families. 26.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.81.

In the township the population was spread out with 21.6% under the age of 18, 6.9% from 18 to 24, 28.6% from 25 to 44, 28.0% from 45 to 64, and 15.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 101.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 97.0 males.

The median income for a household in the township was $35,104, and the median income for a family was $40,700. Males had a median income of $27,813 versus $20,977 for females. The per capita income for the township was $17,290. About 6.2% of families and 8.9% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.1% of those under age 18 and 6.7% of those age 65 or over.

Education

The local public school system is the Milton Area School District. It serves just over 2000 students. Enrollment is projected by the Pennsylvania Department of Education to decline significantly over the next ten years. Milton High School has an 89.9% graduation rate according to the district report card 2005-2006. In 11th grade, 49.4% were proficient in math. The Montandon Elementary School earned a No Child Left Behind Blue Ribbon Award for outstanding performance on the Pennsylvania System of School Assessment for 2005. The Milton Area School Board set the budget at $24.8 million for 2007-2008. The board levies a variety of taxes to support its programs. Taxes include 48.39 mills real estate tax in 2007 for district properties located in Northumberland County. Voters rejected a tax referendum in May 2007. The proposal increased local earned income tax to reduce property taxes for primary homeowners and farmers. By law, the local public school must provide transportation to schools within 10 miles of the borders of the school district at no charge to the student.
