A secondary cutoff named the Slate Creek or Kinney Cutoff breaks from the main trail near the Lombard Ferry on the Green River, and meets the Sublette cutoff on Slate Creek Ridge. This route was slightly longer then the Sublette, but had the advantage of only 10 waterless miles rather than the 45 endured on the Sublette trail. Lander Road

The route provided ample wood, grass and water for the travelers, and cut nearly 7 days off the total travel time for wagon trails. The Lander road remained in constant use until 1912, when automobiles made it obsolete.
