wooden fort constructed in 1866 on theLaramie Plains in southernWyoming , near the city of Laramie. Originally named Fort John Buford, it was renamed Fort Sanders after GeneralWilliam P. Sanders who died at theSiege of Knoxville during theAmerican Civil War . This was the second fort to be named after Sanders, the first being inKnoxville, Tennessee . The fort was originally intended to protect travelers on the nearbyOverland Trail from Indian attacks, but later the garrison was tasked with protecting the workers of theUnion Pacific railroad when it arrived in the spring of 1868. In 1969 the town of Laramie (originally called "Laramie City") was created about convert|3|mi|km|1 north of the fort. Fort Sanders became less important following the construction of Fort D. A. Russell in Cheyenne in 1868, but the War Department maintained it until 1882 when the buildings were sold.Fort layout
The fort grounds were convert|223|ft|m|0 by convert|400|ft|m|0, including a parade ground. The post was originally built for four companies, but was later expanded to accommodate six [cite book |title=A Report on Barracks and Hospitals, with Descriptions of Military Posts|last=Billings |first=John Shaw|year=1870 |publisher=Government Print Office] . Nearly all of the buildings were constructed of wood except for the stone guardhouse, which was built in 1869 and remains the only structure standing today [cite web|url=http://wyoshpo.state.wy.us/fortsand.htm|title=Fort Sanders Guardhouse|publisher=Wyoming Division of State Parks and Cultural Resources|accessdate=2008-01-28] .
