Gallitzin is a borough within Gallitzin Township in Cambria County, Pennsylvania, in the United States. Standing 12 miles (19 km) northwest of Altoona, it was first incorporated in 1872, and named for Prince Gallitzin, who founded the Catholic town of Loretto, Cambria County. Coal-mining and the production of coke were important industries. It is part of the Altoona, Pennsylvania Metropolitan Statistical Area. In 1900, 2,759 people lived in Gallitzin, and by 1910, that number had risen to 3,504 people. As of the 2000 census, the borough population was 1,756. Gallitzin is well known for its historic railroad tunnels (Gallitzin Tunnel), which are a minor tourist draw. Horseshoe Curve (Pennsylvania) and the Allegheny Portage Railroad historic site are also nearby.

Gallitzin is located at coor dms|40|28|55|N|78|33|8|W|city (40.481816, -78.552336)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.9 km²), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 1,756 people, 700 households, and 476 families residing in the borough. The population density was 2,396.0 people per square mile (928.8/km²). There were 763 housing units at an average density of 1,041.1/sq mi (403.6/km²). The racial makeup of the borough was 98.86% White, 0.11% African American, 0.23% Native American, 0.06% Asian, and 0.74% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.85% of the population.

There were 700 households out of which 30.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.7% were married couples living together, 12.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.9% were non-families. 29.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 15.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.51 and the average family size was 3.10.

In the borough the population was spread out with 23.1% under the age of 18, 9.9% from 18 to 24, 28.6% from 25 to 44, 21.9% from 45 to 64, and 16.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 88.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.4 males.

The median income for a household in the borough was $32,386, and the median income for a family was $38,438. Males had a median income of $29,022 versus $19,550 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $14,216. About 7.2% of families and 10.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 13.1% of those under age 18 and 10.3% of those age 65 or over.
