Political and psephological interest
Hornsey and Wood Green is one of a handful of predominantly
middle class parliamentary constituencies across the UK which returned a Conservative MP during the 1980s, swung to Labour in the 1990s, and was subsequently picked up by the Liberal Democrats in the 2005 general election. Other such seats include Birmingham Yardley, Bristol West, Cambridge, Cardiff Central, East Dunbartonshire, Falmouth and Camborne, Leeds North-West, and Manchester Withington. Some argue that this reflects changing positions of the parties themselves while others argue that the beliefs of the middle class itself have changed.Election results
