Altamont is an unincorporated community in Klamath County, Oregon, United States southeast of Klamath Falls. For statistical purposes, the United States Census Bureau has defined Altamont as a census-designated place (CDP). The census definition of the area may not precisely correspond to local understanding of the area with the same name. The population was 19,603 at the 2000 census.

Altamont is commonly considered part of adjacent Klamath Falls by those who live in and near the community;Fact|date=February 2007 indeed, all mailing addresses in Altamont are Klamath Falls addresses. However, Altamont is outside of the city limits of Klamath Falls.

History

Altamont may have been named after Altamont, a locally famous trotting horse, by a prominent local horseman, Jay Beach. cite book| last = McArthur | first = Lewis A. | authorlink = Lewis A. According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 8.7 square miles (22.6 km²), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 19,603 people, 7,777 households, and 5,420 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 2,248.5 people per square mile (868.0/km²). There were 8,315 housing units at an average density of 953.8/sq mi (368.2/km²).

The racial makeup of the CDP was:
