The Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH) is a professional and educational body, dedicated to the promotion of environmental health and to encouraging the highest possible standards in the training and the work of environmental health professionals.

History

It was founded in 1883.

Structure

It is located in the UK, and has approximately 10,000 members worldwide, the majority being based in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. It is based near the King's Reach Tower in Southwark.

CIEH Wales is in on the A4051 in Cwmbran and CIEH Northern Ireland is on York Street (A2) in Belfast.

The CIEH has a wholly owned trading subsidiary, Chadwick House Group Ltd (CHGL). CHGL's profits are gift-aided to the CIEH and provide the majority of the organisation's income.

CHGL provides over a range of certification training programmes covering topics such as food safety, health and safety and environmental awareness. These are delivered through a network of registered trainers and training centres. It also organises conferences and seminars, produces the CIEH members' magazine Environmental Health News and manages the conference facilities at the organisation's headquarters.

Function

As well as providing services and information to its members, the CIEH also advises government departments on environmental health and is consulted by them on proposed legislation relevant to the work of environmental health professionals. Its mission is to maintain, enhance and promote improvements in public and environmental health.
