As of the
census GR|2 of 2000, there were 13,492 people, 5,194 households, and 3,807 families residing in the CDP. Thepopulation density was 3,382.8 people per square mile (1,305.6/km²). There were 5,336 housing units at an average density of 1,337.9/sq mi (516.4/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 72.95% White, 23.83% African American, 0.16% Native American, 1.10% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.45% from other races, and 1.48% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.80% of the population.There were 5,194 households out of which 34.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.7% were married couples living together, 14.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.7% were non-families. 23.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.57 and the average family size was 3.04.
In the CDP the population was spread out with 27.6% under the age of 18, 6.1% from 18 to 24, 26.3% from 25 to 44, 22.9% from 45 to 64, and 17.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 87.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 80.3 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $52,219, and the median income for a family was $58,393. Males had a median income of $41,932 versus $31,250 for females. The
per capita income for the CDP was $25,355. About 4.3% of families and 5.9% of the population were below thepoverty line , including 7.5% of those under age 18 and 4.1% of those age 65 or over.Education
