As of the
census GR|2 of 2000, there were 574 people, 295 households, and 158 families residing in the city. Thepopulation density was 694.0 people per square mile (267.0/km²). There were 335 housing units at an average density of 405.0/sq mi (155.8/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 97.91% White, 0.35% African American, 0.35% Native American, and 1.39% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.87% of the population.There were 295 households out of which 18.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.7% were married couples living together, 6.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 46.4% were non-families. 42.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 23.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 1.95 and the average family size was 2.66.
In the city the population was spread out with 17.1% under the age of 18, 6.1% from 18 to 24, 20.7% from 25 to 44, 27.2% from 45 to 64, and 28.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 50 years. For every 100 females there were 86.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 82.4 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $25,536, and the median income for a family was $44,375. Males had a median income of $29,500 versus $17,375 for females. The
