As of the
census GR|2 of 2000, there were 1,465 people, 585 households, and 374 families residing in the town. Thepopulation density was 608.5 people per square mile (234.7/km²). There were 636 housing units at an average density of 264.2/sq mi (101.9/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 79.39% White, 19.11% African American, 0.14% Native American, 0.14% Asian, 0.34% from other races, and 0.89% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.96% of the population.There were 585 households out of which 26.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% were married couples living together, 15.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.9% were non-families. 32.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 15.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.24 and the average family size was 2.83.
In the town the population was spread out with 19.5% under the age of 18, 6.3% from 18 to 24, 24.6% from 25 to 44, 22.8% from 45 to 64, and 26.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 45 years. For every 100 females there were 80.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 73.1 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $31,944, and the median income for a family was $41,250. Males had a median income of $31,953 versus $24,871 for females. The
per capita income for the town was $16,117. About 8.3% of families and 12.5% of the population were below thepoverty line , including 10.0% of those under age 18 and 17.8% of those age 65 or over.References
