The town was formed in 1854 from parts of four other towns: Dansville, Hornellsville, Howard, and Wayland.
Geography
According to the
United States Census Bureau , the town has a total area of 32.4square mile s (83.8km² ), of which, 32.2 square miles (83.5 km²) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.3 km²) of it (0.40%) is water.The
Southern Tier Expressway (Interstate 86 andNew York State Highway 17 ) andNew York State Route 21 pass through the south part of the town.Demographics
As of the
census GR|2 of 2000, there were 964 people, 395 households, and 278 families residing in the town. Thepopulation density was 29.9 people per square mile (11.5/km²). There were 458 housing units at an average density of 14.2/sq mi (5.5/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 99.27% White, 0.21% Native American, 0.10% Asian, 0.10% from other races, and 0.31% from two or more races.There were 395 households out of which 29.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.7% were married couples living together, 7.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.6% were non-families. 24.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.44 and the average family size was 2.87.
In the town the population was spread out with 24.1% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 28.3% from 25 to 44, 26.9% from 45 to 64, and 14.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 101.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 101.7 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $33,750, and the median income for a family was $40,714. Males had a median income of $31,250 versus $24,688 for females. The

*Jobs Corner -- A hamlet in the eastern part of the town by the junction of County Roads 54 and 55. Jobs Corner is the location of the first pioneer settlement in the town.
