Rio Communities is a census-designated place (CDP) in Valencia County, New Mexico, United States. The population was 4,213 at the 2000 census.

Geography

Rio Communities is located at coor dms|34|38|31|N|106|43|37|W|city (34.641895, -106.727021)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 6.1 square miles (15.9 km²), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 4,213 people, 1,762 households, and 1,235 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 686.1 people per square mile (264.9/km²). There were 1,910 housing units at an average density of 311.0/sq mi (120.1/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 79.87% White, 3.13% African American, 1.28% Native American, 0.47% Asian, 0.17% Pacific Islander, 11.30% from other races, and 3.77% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 37.05% of the population.

There were 1,762 households out of which 25.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.2% were married couples living together, 10.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.9% were non-families. 26.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 15.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.39 and the average family size was 2.86.

In the CDP the population was spread out with 23.2% under the age of 18, 5.6% from 18 to 24, 21.8% from 25 to 44, 23.7% from 45 to 64, and 25.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 44 years. For every 100 females there were 88.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.6 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP was $33,125, and the median income for a family was $39,205. Males had a median income of $29,755 versus $26,985 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $18,260. About 5.3% of families and 7.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.1% of those under age 18 and 5.8% of those age 65 or over.
