United States Census Bureau , the town has a total area of convert|48.4|sqmi|km2, of which convert|48.2|sqmi|km2|abbr=on is land and convert|0.2|sqmi|km2|abbr=on is water, comprising 0.48% of the town. The highest point in Benton is the summit ofMount Moosilauke , at convert|4802|ft|m abovesea level . census GR|2 of 2000, there were 314 people, 91 households, and 59 families residing in the town. Thepopulation density was 6.5 people per square mile (2.5/km²). There were 155 housing units at an average density of 3.2/sq mi (1.2/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 97.45% White, 0.32% Asian, and 2.23% from two or more races.There were 91 households out of which 30.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.0% were married couples living together, 6.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.1% were non-families. 28.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.43 and the average family size was 2.95.
In the town the population was spread out with 18.8% under the age of 18, 4.5% from 18 to 24, 22.3% from 25 to 44, 22.0% from 45 to 64, and 32.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 48 years. For every 100 females there were 78.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 75.9 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $34,167, and the median income for a family was $40,417. Males had a median income of $28,125 versus $22,188 for females. The
per capita income for the town was $13,220. About 3.8% of families and 8.8% of the population were below thepoverty line , including none of those under age 18 and 13.0% of those age 65 or over.References
