Geography
According to the
United States Census Bureau , the city has a total area of 1.9square mile s (4.8km² ), all of it land.One of the city's major landmarks is The College of St. Benedict. An all-female Catholic college, the college sticks out in the downtown area due to the high spire of the church itself, and the rotunda and dome of the college. The architecture is different than others, and is clearly visible from miles away. The presence of CSB, and the fact that it is all-female, have major implications for the city's demographics.
Demographics
As of the
census GR|2 of 2000, there were 4,681 people, 1,120 households, and 712 families residing in the city. Thepopulation density was 2,517.4 people per square mile (971.7/km²). There were 1,147 housing units at an average density of 616.8/sq mi (238.1/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 96.69% White, 1.00% African American, 0.21% Native American, 0.98% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 0.38% from other races, and 0.66% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.22% of the population.There were 1,120 households out of which 35.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 10.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.4% were non-families. 21.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 6.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.74 and the average family size was 3.06.
The age distribution is 16.7% under the age of 18, 44.4% from 18 to 24, 19.8% from 25 to 44, 10.4% from 45 to 64, and 8.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 22 years. For every 100 females there were 46.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 39.1 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $38,938, and the median income for a family was $44,737. Males had a median income of $33,344 versus $22,007 for females. The
per capita income for the city was $12,011. About 5.4% of families and 20.8% of the population were below thepoverty line , including 7.7% of those under age 18 and 35.2% of those age 65 or over.References
