- Driscoll (surname)
-
Driscoll is one derivation of the Irish Gaelic surname O'Driscoll. The Irish for O'Driscoll is Ó hEidirsceoil. It originates from Cork in the province of Munster where the O'Driscolls were, in ancient times, a powerful clan. They descend from an early High King of Ireland known as Lugaid mac Con (O'Donovan 1849). The O'Driscolls were the most powerful sept of the Corcu Loígde, the historical descendants of the Dáirine, to whom Lugaid mac Con belonged.
Most O'Driscolls and Driscolls live in Ireland,[citation needed] with many others living in the United States, Canada, Australia, and Britain. Many families have since dropped the 'O' prefix before the name, and now go simply by the name Driscoll, both in Ireland and abroad.
