* Elmer is an
unincorporated community at the junction of M-19 and M-46 along the northern boundary of the township with Moore Township at coord|43|25|11|N|82|55|45|W| [gnis|625519|Elmer, Michigan] The first white settler in the area, Walter Hyslop, arrived in January 1866. The community was named after the township, which was organized in 1870. As of the
census GR|2 of 2000, there were 790 people, 282 households, and 228 families residing in the township. Thepopulation density was 21.8 per square mile (8.4/km²). There were 308 housing units at an average density of 8.5/sq mi (3.3/km²). The racial makeup of the township was 98.61% White, 0.13% Native American, 0.51% Asian, and 0.76% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.25% of the population.There were 282 households out of which 39.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 71.6% were married couples living together, 6.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 18.8% were non-families. 17.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.79 and the average family size was 3.14.
In the township the population was spread out with 27.6% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 30.3% from 25 to 44, 20.1% from 45 to 64, and 14.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 102.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 102.1 males.
