Aizawl district is one of the 11 districts of
Mizoram state inIndia . The district is bounded on the north byKolasib district andCachar district ofAssam state, on the west byMamit district , on the south by Lunglei and Serchhip districts and on the east byChamphai district and Churachandpur district ofManipur state. The district has an area of 3576.31 km2. The headquarters of the district isAizawl city, the capital of Mizoram.Origin of name
The district is named after the headquarters of the district, Aizawl city. In Mizo language, "ai" refers to a type of fruit and "zawl" means 'plain,' or 'flat'. The name of the city was probably derived from the abundance of the 'ai' fruit in a place at the centre of the city.
Demography
According to the census of 2001 total population of the district is 339,812, out of which male population is 173,930 and female population is 165,882. The literacy rate as per the same census is 96.64% (male 97.20% and female 96.06%).
Divisions
The district has 5 R.D. Blocks, Aibawk, Darlawn, Phullen, Thingsulthliah and Tlangnuam.
The district has 13 assembly constituencies. These are Aizawl North I, Aizawl North II, Aizawl South I, Aizawl South II, Aizawl West I, Aizawl West II, Aizawl East I, Aizawl East II, Saitual, Suangpuilawn, Ratu, Sateek and Tlungvel.
