According to the
United States Census Bureau , the township has a total area of 22.7square mile s (58.7km² ), of which, 22.2 square miles (57.6 km²) of it is land and 0.4 square miles (1.2 km²) of it (1.98%) is water.Demographics

census GR|2 of 2000, there were 1,402 people, 601 households, and 403 families residing in the township. Thepopulation density was 63.0 per square mile (24.3/km²). There were 1,321 housing units at an average density of 59.4/sq mi (22.9/km²). The racial makeup of the township was 97.57% White, 1.21% Native American, 0.07% Asian, 0.14% from other races, and 1.00% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.00% of the population.There were 601 households out of which 23.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.4% were married couples living together, 7.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.8% were non-families. 26.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.33 and the average family size was 2.79.
In the township the population was spread out with 21.8% under the age of 18, 5.3% from 18 to 24, 23.5% from 25 to 44, 29.3% from 45 to 64, and 20.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 44 years. For every 100 females there were 98.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 96.1 males.
The median income for a household in the township was $24,444, and the median income for a family was $32,574. Males had a median income of $30,795 versus $19,643 for females. The
