Tennessee County

Tennessee County

Tennessee County was a subdivision of the territory of North Carolina that later became the state of Tennessee.

Tennessee County was organized in 1788 from a portion of Davidson County. It was abolished in 1796 when Tennessee (which by then was no longer a North Carolina territory, having been ceded to the national government as the U.S. Territory South of the River Ohio) was admitted to statehood and the county's name was adopted for the entire state. At the time of statehood, the lands formerly included in Tennessee County were divided into Montgomery and Robertson counties.
