Syracuse is a city in Hamilton County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,824 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Hamilton CountyGR|6.

Geography

Syracuse is located at coor dms|37|58|59|N|101|45|4|W|city (37.982938, -101.751224)GR|1, along U.S. Route 50 sixteen miles (twenty-six kilometers) from the Colorado border. The Arkansas River runs just south of the City of Syracuse. The countryside south of the Arkansas River is marked by sandhills. Located within these sandhills is the "Syracuse Sand Dunes," a city park covering 1300 acres, including a 40 acre fishing pond.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.3 square miles (3.4 km²), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 1,824 people, 742 households, and 483 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,374.0 people per square mile (529.5/km²). There were 830 housing units at an average density of 625.2/sq mi (241.0/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 79.22% White, 0.71% African American, 0.27% Native American, 0.82% Asian, 17.65% from other races, and 1.32% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 22.42% of the population.

There were 742 households out of which 33.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.5% were married couples living together, 7.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.9% were non-families. 32.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 17.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.46 and the average family size was 3.13.

In the city the population was spread out with 29.2% under the age of 18, 7.6% from 18 to 24, 25.5% from 25 to 44, 20.4% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 95.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.7 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $31,250, and the median income for a family was $37,976. Males had a median income of $29,000 versus $23,482 for females. The per capita income for the city was $15,531. About 10.7% of families and 15.0% of the population were below the poverty line, including 20.0% of those under age 18 and 11.6% of those age 65 or over.

Education

The school's mascot is the bulldog. Syracuse High School is the unified high school for Hamilton County.
