U.S. Navy for service inWorld War II . Her task was to carry stores, refrigerated items, and equipment to ships in the fleet, and to remote stations and staging areas."Latona" was launched under

Departing
Galveston, Texas ,15 March , "Latona" loaded dry and refrigerated cargo atMobile, Alabama , transited thePanama Canal , and arrivedPearl Harbor 17 April . Assigned toService Squadron 8, she sailed28 April for the westernPacific Ocean . She reachedUlithi , western Carolines,14 May , joined Service Squadron 10, and departed inconvoy 15 May for the Ryūkyūs. She arrivedKerama Retto 21 May . Despite frequent air alerts, she completed unloading cargo30 May .End-of-war activity

31 May . Steaming via Ulithi, she arrived Pearl Harbor24 June , loaded fleet provisions, then returned to Ulithi 4 to21 July . She proceeded toOkinawa 25 July to4 August , unloaded her cargo atBuckner Bay , and departed17 August forNew Zealand . Sailing via Ulithi and Manus, Admiralties, she arrivedAuckland 10 September . After loading refrigerated cargo, she steamed toGuam 19 September to4 October . Over the next month she transported provisions to bases in the Marianas and onIwo Jima before returning to Pearl Harbor18 November with 64 military passengers embarked. After making a supply run toWake Island and the Marshalls between1 December and12 January 1946 , she sailed to theU.S. West Coast , where she arrivedSan Pedro, California ,2 February . Loaded with fleet provisions, "Latona" departed for theFar East 19 February . During a period of almost 3 years, she made nine deployments to bases scattered throughout the western and central Pacific, including five supply runs to the Marshalls and Marianas, and four to the Far East. While serving in the Far East, she transported dry and refrigerated cargo fromSubic Bay ,Manila Bay , andLeyte Gulf In thePhilippines toJapan andChina . Between16 August 1946 and21 November 1948 she steamed on four occasions toTsingtao ,Shanghai , andChinwangtao , China, to provision ships supportingNationalist Chinese operations on the Chinese mainland.Decommissioning
"Latona" departed Tsingtao
21 November and arrivedOakland, California ,12 December . She enteredMare Island Navy Yard 22 December and decommissioned there15 April 1949 . She was returned to theWar Shipping Administration and entered theNational Defense Reserve Fleet . She was placed in reserve atSuisun Bay, California and struck from theNavy Vessel Register (date unknown). Final Disposition: scrapped in 1973.Military awards and honors
