County Antrim inNorthern Ireland . Its headquarters is in thetown ofLarne and the population of the area is nearly 31,000. Larne is one of the most modern roll on-roll off ferry ports in theUnited Kingdom with a busy passenger traffic withScotland .The Larne Borough Council area consists of 3 electoral areas: Larne Town, Larne Lough and Coast Road. At the last election in
2005 15 members were elected from the following political parties: 5Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), 4Ulster Unionist Party (UUP), 2 Independent, 2 Alliance Party and 2Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP). Since the election one Independent has died, and has been replaced by another independent. Also,Jack McKee in January 2007 resigned from the DUP in protest over theSt Andrews Agreement and now sits as an independent. This leaves the council as 4 DUP, 4 UUP, 3 Ind, 2 APNI and 2 SDLP. The current Mayor is Councillor Mark Dunn (UUP). The Deputy Mayor is Councillor Greg McKeen (DUP).Together with the neighbouring district of

Under the Review of Public Administration (RPA) the Council is due to merge with
Ballymena Borough Council andCarrickfergus Borough Council in 2011 to form a single council for the enlarged area totalling 1047 km² and a population of 127,101.
