Early life
Mark Deutrom's first professional engagement was at age 15 when he played guitar in an El Paso Community Theater production of Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris. The following year he played guitar for a production of Godspell for the same theater company. He studied classical guitar with Hector Quine of the Royal Academy of Music in London the same year for a brief time.
Deutrom went to California Institute of the Arts in Valencia, CA to study composition, and attended seminars with such composers as John Cage, Lou Harrison, Morton Feldman, Aaron Copland, and Morton Subotnick.
In the early 1980s Deutrom was a member of a Los Angeles based art co-op called Werkgruppe founded by D. Emily Hicks and Daniel Joseph Martinez. Lori Black was also a member. Deutrom contributed several multichannel soundtracks for Hicks' and Martinez's conceptual pieces culminating in a 23 channel synthetic audio environment for the 1984 Olympics Arts Festival installation entitled "The Peoples of Los Angeles". The piece included multiplex holograms of individuals from Los Angeles reciting soundtracks of their experiences in the region against a constantly shifting holographic audio ambience. Other collaborators included physicist and holographer Lloyd Cross, holographer Sharon McCormack, artist Abbe Don and musician Chili Charles. The exhibition was held at the University of Southern California Atelier Gallery in Santa Monica. A catalog was published that included 3-D glasses. "The Peoples of Los Angeles" was reviewed in The Los Angeles Herald Examiner.[1] It was also reviewed in The Los Angeles Times.[2]
Alchemy records
In 1986 Deutrom co-founded Alchemy Records in San Francisco, CA. During his time at the label he produced a record for his own band, Clown Alley, as well as records for Sacrilege BC, Melvins, RKL, and Neurosis. Deutrom also produced LPs for Texas band Rhythm Pigs, and Italian hardcore band Raw Power for other labels during this time. He split from Alchemy in 1988 and relocated to London.
In 1989 he returned to San Francisco to produce Ozma for the Melvins which now featured Lori Black, also from the band Clown Alley. Deutrom was sound engineer for a 1992 European tour on which the Melvins played at the Reading and Leeds Festival at the request of headliners Nirvana, and were reportedly called the worst band to ever play at the festival by one of the organizers. He also did sound engineering for the band on a US tour with GWAR when Joe Preston was in the band.
Melvins
In 1993 Deutrom was asked to play bass in the Melvins. He was in the band from 1993–1998 and played on and contributed material to the albums Prick, Stoner Witch, Stag, Honky, Alive at the Fucker Club, and a variety of limited edition releases. During this time the band did tours with Nine Inch Nails, Helmet, L7, Lollapalooza, White Zombie, Tool, Kiss, Rush, and Nirvana, including playing at their last concert in Munich in 1994.
Post-Melvins and recent work
In 1998 Deutrom (under the name Mark D*) recorded a solo project called The Silent Treatmen which was eventually released on Teepee Records in 2001. After relocating back to the United States, he co-produced a CD for Texas-based bluegrass band The Meat Purveyors called "Pain By Numbers" on Bloodshot Records in 2004.
Sunn O))) invited Deutrom to tour Europe with the group in 2006, as well as play numerous dates in the US, including an opening slot with Celtic Frost. He also participated in the group's collaboration with artist Banks Violette at the Maureen Paley Gallery in London in June of that year.
He has done production work with Tony Scalzo from Fastball, and also mixed projects for Austin bands Gorch Fock, Tia Carrera, and Woodgrain.
