Robsart is a small hamlet in the Southwestern region of Saskatchewan located on Redcoat Trail, about 50 km east of the Alberta-Saskatchewan border and about 175 km southwest of Swift Current. Robsart is known for a UFO sighting about 25 km from Robsart in 1929. The sighting was described as a huge ball of light that gave off fiery colors, and then landing lighting the countryside for about 30 minutes and then slowly disappearing into the night air. Population

Robsart, like so many other communities throughout Saskatchewan, has struggled to maintain a sturdy population causing it to become a semi ghost town.

Prior to January 1, 2002, Robsart was a village, but it was restructured as a hamlet on that date. [cite web

History

In 1910, Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) purchased a quarter section of land in the southwest region of Saskatchewan and called it Robsart. The land was named after Amy Robsart, from the Sir Walter Scott book, "Kenilworth". Three years later the land was bought by a man named Henry Abbott, who led the first settlers to the new community. Shortly after the settlers arrived, businesses started to go up quickly. Two of the first businesses were a general store and feed mill. Following them were 30 other businesses, including a dentist, jeweller, and a surgeon.

The Great Depression

In the late twenties Robsart's prosperous beginnings began a long decline. Starting with a grain elevator fire in 1929, one year later another blaze wiped out a large section of the business core. Next to follow were the Great Depression years, with accompanying droughts, falling grain prices and poor crop yields, causing further business closures in the once industrious business core. Many merchants were hit by crippling financial losses; most just packed up and left in search for a better way of life. locals and nearby farmers rallied to renovate the old community hall but slowly, one by one, most remaining businesses and homes were boarded up. By the end of 2000, only half a dozen people were living in Robsart. As of 2008 the hamlet had only nine residents.

Economy

Agriculture is the top employment field with many surrounding farms and ranches.

Railway

In 1914 the arrival of the railway brought even more prosperity for the small prairie community. New businesses were opening almost weekly, bringing new hotels, cafés, churches, livery barns, schools, a banks, grain elevators, and a few years later its very own hospital. The town was so prosperous that postcards of the town described Robsart as “A town with a bright future.”

Ten years after the town of Robsart was established it had a population of 350 residents, its own town hall, mayor, town council, and around more than 50 businesses.

Education

Robsart no longer has a school, but those who live in Robsart are sent to the neighbouring village of Consul which has a school that covers Kindergarten to Grade 12 serving approximately 100 students.

Notable People

Eiliv Anderson, born in Robsart 1934 and was a corporate executive, with a degree from the executive program of Queen's University's School of Business.
