People & Power is the flagship current affairs programme on Al Jazeera English, broadcast twice a week, on Wednesdays and Sundays, and repeated throughout the week.

Each 22.30 minute programme features one or two short investigative documentaries on a power issue from around the world. The programme sometimes has one hour specials.

Samah El Shahat
Presenter

Before joining the programme Samah worked closely with Al Jazeera in the past, most recently on a special film for People & Power called 'A Bitter Clash’. Samah founded Thingybob Productions, a film company, in order to raise awareness of development issues in the South. Samah is also a development economist, and has been a consultant to the International Development Research Centre (IDRC), the Canadian Government, Foundation for International Training (FIT) and the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO). She has also been an economic advisor on SMEs and innovation policy to the governments of Kenya, Egypt, Ghana, Pakistan and Mauritius. Samah will obtain her PhD in economics from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London, in 2007.

Juliana Ruhfus Main reporterNovember 2006 – present.

Award-winning filmmaker and journalist Juliana Ruhfus has spent over a decade working as a reporter and producer for British and international broadcasters, specialising in international programme making and investigative work. In news pieces, current affairs films and feature length documentaries Juliana has covered many of the world's under-reported conflicts including Somalia, Haiti, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Indonesia, Yemen and Peru, often gaining unique access to the warring factions and always with a strong focus on the human stories behind the news. Her films have often had an impact beyond television and have been shown at festivals, the British Parliament, international trade union congresses and at universities. Juliana has also worked as a print journalist and as a consultant on small arms issues to the UN and other organisations.

Zeina Awad has covered some of the Middle East and Africa’s most important stories for People and Power, including the rise of Islamism in Lebanon’s Palestinian refugee camps, Iraq’s forgotten refugees, and the underground world of Zimbabwean human trafficking. Mohamed Maklouf Mohamed Maklouf has been a filmmaker and film journalist since 1983. He is also the Founder and Executive Director of the Arab Screen Independent Film Festival, which specializes in Arab short films and documentary films.
He made a film for People & Power on the constraints of the media in Egypt, and is currently working on a new project for the programme.

History

People & Power was launched on November 15 2006 on the new [http://english.aljazeera.net/English Al Jazeera English] Al Jazeera English channel.

It was originally presented by reporter Shereen El Feki but she was replaced by a new presenter, [http://english.aljazeera.net/NR/exeres/758EE08A-5F2E-4BBA-A12D-A1D19CDEAFFF.htm Samah El-Shahat] , a development economist, in March 2007.

[http://english.aljazeera.net/NR/exeres/9A832AA4-D7D1-459C-86C9-89AEC1F63779.htm Juliana Ruhfus] is the programme’s main reporter and occasional presenter. Her film on the ex-combattants in Liberia launched the strand the day Al Jazeera went on air.

She is formerly an independent current affairs and documentary reporter and producer for international broadcasters such as [http://www.channel4.com/ Channel 4 (UK)] , [http://www.bbc.co.uk/ BBC] , [http://www.ard.de/ ARD (Germany)] and [http://www.nhk.or.jp/english/ NHK (Japan)] .

The show has introduced several regular slots. A series called ‘If I had the Power’ asked people in the street what they would do if they had the power of President of the United States George W. Bush for the day. Five minute long ‘Power of One’ films look at how one person has changed the lives of a community through their own actions. In spite of the Delta's vast oil wealth the people are poor -- and deprived of a democratic voice. As a result, the last 15 months has seen an escalation in militant groups operating in the region. Some claim that that they are fighting to help ensure local people benefit from the Delta's oil wealth, in the face of intimidation and corruption from politicians.

On the day of Tony Blair’s departure, Samah El-Shahat led a discussion on the departing Prime Minister’s legacy. Her guests were the Iraqi journalist Ziad Al-Khuzai, Ruth Lea - the Director of the Centre for Policy Studies and Lord Ahmed from the British House of Lords.

In a People & Power special on 3rd June 2007, Samah El-Shahat led a discussion on the ‘Fragmentation of the Middle East’ from the Doha studios. It featured Dr. Azzam Tamimi, the Director of the Institute for Islamic Political Thought, Dr. Amr Hamzawy, a Senior Researcher at the Carnegie Endowment, Dr. Ibrahim Mousawi, the Editor-in-Chief of foreign news at Al Manar TV, and Dr. Ahmed Abdel Malik, a Qatari Journalist.

On 7th June 2007 Samah interviewed Robert Holmes Tuttle, the American Ambassador in London, on the subject of the G8 summit.
