MedStar Health is a $3.9 billion not-for-profit healthcare organization. It operates more than 40 entities, including nine hospitals in the Maryland and Washington, D.C., region of the United States. As the area's largest health system, it is also one of its largest employers, with more than 26,000 associates and 5,300 affiliated physicians.

History

MedStar Health associates serve more than a million and a half patients annually. MedStar contributes approximately $111 million in payroll tax to the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia each year. Additionally, MedStar Health provides more than $260 million in charity care and community benefit on an annual basis.^{[citation needed]}

In 1998, Medlantic Healthcare Group merged with Helix Health, a group of four Baltimore, Md. hospitals, making the combined company the largest healthcare provider in the mid-Atlantic region. Helix/Medlantic was renamed MedStar Health on February 1, 1999.

On July 1, 2000, Georgetown University Hospital became part of MedStar Health.

On February 1, 2008, MedStar Health merged with Montgomery General Hospital, Montgomery County's oldest acute care hospital. Montgomery General was the eighth hospital in MedStar Health’s network and the first hospital in Montgomery County to join the healthcare system.^[2]

In September, 2009, St. Mary's Hospital in Leonardtown, Maryland merged with MedStar Health, becoming the ninth hospital in the system, and the first in Southern Maryland.^[3]

General

MedStar Health's areas of clinical activity include cardiology, cardiac surgery, oncology services, rehabilitation, neurosciences, orthopedic surgery, women's services, and emergency and trauma services. MedStar has comprehensive services including primary, urgent and subacute care, medical education and research. Other health-related services include assisted living, home health and long-term care. MedStar also operate nursing homes, senior housing, adult day care, rehabilitation and ambulatory centers, as well as maintain MedStar Physician Partners, a comprehensive physician network in Maryland and the Washington, D.C., region. MedStar Health is the official medical team of the Baltimore Ravens.

Economic Impact

MedStar Health is among the largest employers in the region. MedStar Health continues to maintain a high rating from Wall Street's three bond rating agencies. In addition, system entities purchase more than $1.4 billion in goods and services for the region. MedStar Health associates receive more than$1.8 billion in compensation each year.^{[citation needed]}

Franklin Square Hospital Center

Franklin Square Hospital Center is an acute-care teaching hospital offering a full range of services for children and adults. Founded in 1898, Franklin Square offers cutting-edge technology^{[clarification needed]}, treatments, and healthcare specialties not traditionally found at community hospitals. Primary service lines include medicine, oncology, surgical services, women and children's care, behavioral health, and community-based medicine. Franklin Square has been awarded the high-level designation of a Teaching Hospital Cancer Center by the American College of Surgeons, and recently has been accredited as a Magnet hospital for nursing.^[4] It is the third largest hospital in Baltimore, and its emergency department is the busiest in the state with more than 110,000 visits annually. In the fall of 2010, the hospital completed a major expansion project that includes a new seven-story Patient Care Tower, an expanded emergency department, and additional parking facilities. Franklin Square is located in the White Marsh area of Northeastern Baltimore County.

Good Samaritan Hospital

Both a specialty facility and comprehensive community hospital, Good Samaritan is known^{[citation needed]} for excellence in orthopaedics, rheumatology, nephrology, physical and rehabilitation medicine, and burn reconstruction.

For more than 30 years, the hospital has been affiliated with The Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, with special programs in physical and rehabilitation medicine, orthopaedics, and rheumatology. Good Samaritan opened a full-service emergency department in 1990. Since then, it consistently has been one of the fastest growing hospitals in Maryland. In 2003, a new emergency department opened and fueled ever-growing demand for the expert care provided by more than 2,000 associates. The emergency department is consistently ranked among the top 10 percent in the nation for patient satisfaction^{[citation needed]}, and also is accredited as a primary stroke center. In 2005, the hospital opened nine new operating rooms that are specially designed to enhance experiences for patients, surgeons and staff. In 2006, a new 32-bed inpatient unit opened, one that is dedicated to orthopaedic and surgical patients. This unit features mostly private rooms, decentralized nursing stations to keep caregivers closer to the patients and a large area for group physical therapy. All other hospital patient care units were recently renovated.

Today, Good Samaritan is licensed for 265 medical/surgical, 51 comprehensive rehab, and 30 transitional care beds. In addition to hospital services, the Good Samaritan Nursing Center and senior housing complexes, Woodbourne Woods and Belvedere Green, are located on the 43-acre (170,000 m²) campus.

Harbor Hospital

Harbor Hospital was first established in 1903 as a small community clinic servicing the waterfront community in Baltimore. More than 100 years later, the 222-bed hospital continues to offer the personal touch of a community hospital while incorporating the excellence of a high technology medical center. It has been the recipient of the Delmarva Foundation’s highest honor, the Excellence Award for Quality for Hospitals, in 2001, 2006, 2007 and 200, 2009 and 2010.^{[citation needed]}

With more than 500 physicians representing 30 medical and surgical specialties, and more than 1,508 associates, the hospital offers a full range of healthcare services for patients from infancy through the senior years. Harbor Hospital’s specialty areas include orthopaedics, women’s services, cancer care, diabetes care, fetal assessment, cardio-pulmonary rehabilitation, and treatment of chronic lung conditions. The hospital’s continuum of care also includes wellness programs, outpatient services and inpatient treatment.

Montgomery General Hospital

As Montgomery County’s first acute-care hospital, Montgomery General Hospital (MGH) is a community-based, 149-bed facility founded by Dr. Jacob Wheeler Bird. After 90 years, the hospital offers a range of wellness programs and outpatient services in addition to inpatient treatment.

With dozens of programs and a large array of services, MGH treats and cares for patients of all ages, newborns through seniors. As such, the hospital handles most medical emergencies, and is accredited by The Joint Commission as a primary stroke center. In addition, the hospital’s chest pain center allows cardiologists to quickly and effectively screen and treat potential cardiac patients, as well as refer them for further treatment through the hospital’s cardiac and vascular laboratory. MGH has also been able to treat patients from several surrounding counties, notably Frederick, Howard and Carroll, through their Olney location, in Northeastern Montgomery County.

Union Memorial Hospital

Located in the North Central section of Baltimore, Union Memorial is a regional specialty and teaching hospital that has been caring for members of the community for more than 150 years. Union Memorial has been named one of the nation’s top 100 hospitals for cardiovascular care by Thomson and ranked among the top 50 orthopedic hospitals in the country by U.S. News & World Report.^{[citation needed]} Union Memorial is known nationally for the Curtis National Hand Center and for developing Maryland’s leading hospital-based sports medicine program. The 283-bed hospital supports residency and fellowship training programs in orthopedics, general surgery, and internal medicine, and received the prestigious 2007 and 2008 Excellence Awards for Quality Improvement for Hospitals from the Delmarva Foundation.^{[citation needed]}

Georgetown University Hospital

Georgetown University Hospital is a not-for-profit, acute care teaching and research hospital with 609 beds located in Northwest Washington, D.C. Founded in the Jesuit principle of cura personalis - caring for the whole person - Georgetown offers a variety of innovative diagnostic and treatment options. Georgetown’s centers of excellence include cancer, neurosciences, gastroenterology, transplant and vascular diseases. Along with Magnet nurses, internationally recognized physicians, advanced research and cutting-edge technologies, Georgetown’s healthcare professionals have a reputation of medical excellence and leadership.^{[citation needed]}

National Rehabilitation Hospital

National Rehabilitation Hospital (NRH) is a private facility located in Washington, D.C. offering inpatient, day treatment and outpatient programs specifically designed for the rehabilitation of individuals with disabling injuries and illnesses. NRH is consistently ranked as one of the top rehab hospitals in America by U.S. News & World Report.^{[citation needed]} NRH is fully accredited by The Joint Commission and the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF). NRH has the only CARF accredited specialty program for both spinal cord injury and stroke in the region. In addition, its spinal cord injury program has been designated as one of only 14 Model SCI Systems of care in the country by the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research, a part of the Department of Education. NRH is a member of MedStar Health.

St. Mary's Hospital

St. Mary's Hospital is a not-for-profit, 103-bed full service hospital located in Leonardtown, St. Mary's County, Maryland. Serving the community since 1912, St. Mary's Hospital treats more than 104,000 patients each year and has been recognized for excellence in quality improvement by the Delmarve Foundation in 2008 and 2009. As the only hospital in one of the state's fastest growing counties, St. Mary's Hospital delivers state-of-the-art emergency, acute inpatient and outpatient care. The hospital also offers an extensive list of screening and diagnostic services to meet the ever-changing needs of the community it serves. Its centers of excellence include behavioral health, diabetes management, emergency/urgent care, hospice, oncology, orthopedics, radiology, community wellness and women's services.

Washington Hospital Center

Washington Hospital Center is a not-for-profit, 926-bed acute care teaching and research hospital based in Northwest Washington, D.C. It is the largest private hospital in the nation’s capital and among the 25 largest hospitals in the mid-Atlantic region. It consistently ranks among the nation’s top hospitals as measured by entities such as U.S. News and World Report, AARP and Consumer’s Checkbook.^{[citation needed]} Washington Heart and Vascular Services Institute is a national leader in the research, diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular disease.^{[citation needed]} The institute’s volumes in coronary artery bypass graft surgery and percutaneous coronary intervention are among the highest in the University Health System Consortium’s clinical database and evidence exceptional morbidity and mortality outcomes. The Hospital Center’s neurosciences program offers a full range of surgical and minimally-invasive treatment. The Washington Cancer Institute provides the latest in treatment and therapies and access to cutting-edge clinical trials. The Hospital Center also operates the area's only adult burn center and the region's premier shock trauma and surgical critical care center, providing major trauma resuscitation, surgery and care of critically ill or injured patients.
