History
The school was founded in 1947 as a ministry of the Central Church of Christ, from which it conducted operations for the first few years of existence. Upon a donation of 8 acres (32,000 m2) by Multnomah County, the City of Portland, and Portland General Electric, buildings were constructed and the school moved to its current location in the 1950s.[7]
Academics
In 1991 the school received accreditation from Association of Christian Schools International,[6] and in 1999 received accreditation from the Northwest Association of Accredited Schools.[4]
Athletics
The girls basketball team was formed in the mid-1990s, while the first few years of the team were not successful, including the much publicized 115-4 loss to Catlin Gabel School. This defeat gained national publicity in Sports Illustrated.[8]
During the 2009-2010 season, the Columbia boys basketball team earned the state championship 1A title.[9]
Future
For much of the 2000s, Columbia has been striving to open a second campus in Vancouver, Washington.[citation needed] While property has been purchased off Padden Parkway, construction has not started due to insufficient funds.[citation needed] The proposal of a new Vancouver campus has been debated by many leaders within the local Churches of Christ who believe that if the school moved, it would be giving up too much in terms of history, location, and attendance.[citation needed]
Prompted by the closure of Cascade College in Spring 2009, Columbia's administrators began a campaign to raise funds to purchase the former college campus. Entitled the "Walk of Faith", the key fundraising campaign is based on the idea of alumni and friends of the school purchasing bricks that will be engraved and placed in a walkway leading from the existing campus to the administration building at Cascade College.[10]
