USS "Lucid" (AM-259) was an
Admirable-class minesweeper built for theU.S. Navy duringWorld War II . She was built to clear minefields in offshore waters, and served the Navy in theAtlantic Ocean ."Lucid" was laid down by
American Shipbuilding Co.,Lorain, Ohio ,20 February 1943 ; launched5 June 1943 ; sponsored by Mrs. Joseph S. Mood; and commissioned1 December 1943 , Lt. Charles Bulfinch in command.World War II Atlantic operations
After shakedown out of
Little Creek, Virginia , "Lucid" departed3 March 1944 for theCaribbean , arrivingGuantánamo Bay 7 March . For the next 12 months, the minesweeper was assigned to escort duty betweenTrinidad ,British West Indies , andRecife, Brazil . Protectingconvoys fromU-boat attacks, she made eight such voyages prior to reporting for duty as atraining ship at Miami28 March 1945 .From April to June, "Lucid" operated as a
school ship out of Miami and trained future naval officers in the art ofseamanship .Decommissioning
Following a brief overhaul at
Norfolk, Virginia , the minesweeper returned toMiami, Florida , and decommissioned there28 August 1945 . She was transferred to theRepublic of China asYung Ting (AM 45) ; reclassified as aSurvey ship and renamedYang Ming (AGS 362) ; permanently transferred to theRepublic of China 12 March 1948 and struck from theNaval Register the same day; and, decommissioned and struck1 July 1972 .
