Hayfork is a census-designated place (CDP) in Trinity County, California, United States. The population was 2,315 at the 2000 census. Originally named Nor'el pom, after the native Indian tribe that lived in the area.

Geography

Hayfork is located at coor dms|40|34|17|N|123|8|48|W|city (40.571406, -123.146619)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 155.6 square miles (403.0 km²), of which, 155.5 square miles (402.8 km²) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km²) of it (0.05%) is water.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 2,315 people, 964 households, and 618 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 14.9 people per square mile (5.7/km²). There were 1,157 housing units at an average density of 7.4/sq mi (2.9/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 84.71% White, 0.13% African American, 8.34% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.39% from other races, and 6.26% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.92% of the population.

There were 964 households out of which 27.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.3% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.8% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.40 and the average family size was 2.96.

In the CDP the population was spread out with 25.5% under the age of 18, 5.9% from 18 to 24, 24.1% from 25 to 44, 29.7% from 45 to 64, and 14.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were 105.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 99.5 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP was $22,824, and the median income for a family was $25,791. Males had a median income of $23,594 versus $29,306 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $14,611. About 17.8% of families and 23.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 28.4% of those under age 18 and 8.8% of those age 65 or over.

Politics

In the state legislature Hayfork is located in the 4th Senate District, represented by Republican Sam Aanestad, and in the 1st Assembly District, represented by Democrat Patty Berg.
