As of the
census GR|2 of 2000, there were 37,403 people, 10,767 households, and 7,806 families residing in the city. Thepopulation density was 4,628.6/km² (11,971.0/mi²). There were 11,011 housing units at an average density of 1,362.6/km² (3,524.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 49.57% White, 2.27% African American, 1.06% Native American, 15.45% Asian, 0.92% Pacific Islander, 25.71% from other races, and 5.02% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 48.89% of the population.There were 10,767 households out of which 41.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.2% were married couples living together, 14.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.5% were non-families. 21.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.43 and the average family size was 3.93.
In the city the population was spread out with 30.4% under the age of 18, 10.5% from 18 to 24, 33.3% from 25 to 44, 16.2% from 45 to 64, and 9.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 30 years. For every 100 females there were 102.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 99.1 males.
Stanton is a low-income community relative to its neighbors. The median income for a household in the city was $39,127, and the median income for a family was $40,162. Males had a median income of $27,644 versus $25,995 for females. The
per capita income for the city was $14,197. About 13.4% of families and 18.0% of the population were below thepoverty line , including 22.2% of those under age 18 and 13.2% of those age 65 or over.Emergency services
Fire protection in Stanton is provided by the
Orange County Fire Authority with ambulance transport byCare Ambulance Service . The Orange County Sheriff's Department provides law enforcement;originally, Stanton has had its own police department since the city's incorporation in 1956, but union strike citing poor working conditions resulted in its disbanding in 1988:A Stanton Police Officer, responding to a call to check the welfare of an apartment unit resident, found a five-year-old boy locked in a dark back room who was left at home alone for hours by his mother who was working as a prostitute after getting off her regular job at the Montgomery Ward service department. The boy pointed the gun at the officer who then fired one shot, killing the boy instantly. It turned out that the gun was a realistic looking toy gun.Dubious|date=March 2008
The District Attorney praised the officer for his actions. A grand jury found the Officer to be not guilty of any wrongdoing. The Stanton Police Department was disbanded in 1988 due to a union strike because of poor working conditions. Orange County Sheriff Bradley Gates ordered his deputies to take over law enforcement duties.Dubious|date=March 2008

In the state legislature Stanton is located in the 34th Senate District, represented by Democrat
Lou Correa , and in the 67th and 68th Assembly District, represented by RepublicansJim Silva andVan Tran respectively.
