Warsaw Cross-City Line

Warsaw Cross-City Line

Warsaw cross-city line ( _pl. Linia Średnicowa) is a 7 km railway line crossing downtown Warsaw in the East-West direction. Opened in 1933 and electrified in 1936, it initially had two tracks, with additional two added in 1949. The central part of the line is in a tunnel (2310 m long); it crosses the Vistula by a bridge (445 m) located between Poniatowski Bridge and Świętokrzyski Bridge.

The line provided a direct short link between Warszawa Wschodnia and Warszawa Zachodnia stations. The pre-1945 Warsaw Main Rail Station was located approximately half-way down the line.

Since 1970s the older (southern) pair of tracks is used by suburban trains, the other by mainline services. The former use Warszawa Stadion, Warszawa Powiśle, Warszawa Śródmieście PKP and Warszawa Ochota stations (listed east-to-west), the latter use Warszawa Centralna.
