Acting career
Larson's first job was performing in sketches on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. Soon after, she was cast in the television series Schimmel, which was announced but never aired, since right before filming Robert Schimmel was diagnosed with cancer. After being "on hold" for ten months FOX canceled the show. She later auditioned for a new show for The WB called "In Your Dreams." She landed the role of Bob Saget's younger daughter, Emily. The show was selected for the 2001-2002 fall season and was renamed "Raising Dad". The show was then canceled after twenty-seven episodes. Larson was also cast in the pilot for the ABC sitcom Hope and Faith, however she and some of the other cast members were dropped after the unaired pilot.
In 2003, Larson was cast as Courtney Enders in the Disney Channel Original Movie Right on Track, a film based on a true story. In July 2004, she co-starred with a large cast of teen actors in the film Sleepover. She also had a small role in the movie 13 Going on 30. Larson also appeared in the film Hoot, opposite actors Logan Lerman and Cody Linley, both of whom are very good friends of hers. The film opened on May 5, 2006. Larson's voice is also featured in the movie Farce of the Penguins as a teenage penguin. She played Angie in the 2007 comedy/drama Remember the Daze.
Larson appeared in the 2008 short film The Babysitter, written and directed by David H. Steinberg and co-starring Josh Cooke, Molly Hagan and John Kapelos. The film can be seen exclusively online at Atom Films.
Larson appeared in an episode of Ghost Whisperer in January 2008. She also has a role as Kate in the 2008 film, Tanner Hall, directed by Francesca Gregorini and Tatiana von Furstenberg.
Larson played the character Kate Gregson on the Showtime series United States of Tara. The show premiered on January 18, 2009 and was cancelled on May 23, 2001 with it's final episode airing on June 20, 2011.
Larson played Envy Adams, Scott Pilgrim's ex-girlfriend in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. For the role, Larson recorded a cover of Metric's song "Black Sheep." This version can only be heard in the film, as Metric's version is on the soundtrack.
Larson has appeared on two episodes of FX's tv show The League as Ashley.
In 2012, Larson will appear in the film adaptation of the popular 1980s tv show 21 Jump Street. She will play Molly and will co-star with Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill.
Music career
Early demos and first album (2003–2005)
In the beginning of 2003, Brie started promoting songs in her own personal website and was already planning to release an album.[1][2] The first song posted was "Go" (later renamed to "Go, Goodbye" and re-recorded for her first album). According to her, the song was about "two great people who just aren't great together"[3] and along with "Invisible Girl", were the tracks that led Brie to sign a record deal with Universal Records' imprint, Casablanca Records,[4] without label's executive, Tommy Mottola, even seeing her in person.[5] Both tracks were written with Michael Binikos and Craig Bartock, who did not believe in her potential to write songs at that time.[6] Later that same year, she posted another track called "Not a Freak" and recorded a music video for it, which was available for purchase online.[7] In late spring of 2004, Brie removed all the songs in her website due to contract restrictions with the record label and was in the process of producing new music for her first album.[8]
In October of that year, the first single from her debut album, "She Said", was available to listen via her official website.[9] Radio KOL was the first radio to play the song.[10] Brie started promoting the single in a radio promotion tour[11] and recorded live performances for AOL Sessions on October 11, 2004.[12] Besides "She Said", she sang two songs, "Ugly" and "Loser In Me". A music video, directed by Chris Applebaum,[13] was shot in November or December 2004, after the Thanksgiving Day,[10][14] but a source say it was filmed on January 9, 2005.[15] In December 2004, the single was available for download in iTunes Music Store,[16] while the CD single format was released on January 11, 2005,[17] same date it was sent to radios across the country.[18]
The video for the song was featured on MTV's TRL as a PreRL on April 4. The song peaked at #31 on the Billboard Hot 100 Single Sales and the single was the 99th best-selling single of 2005, according to Soundscan.
In the summer of 2005, Larson toured with Hollywood recording artist Jesse McCartney and had a concert at KISS FM for more than 20,000 people.[citation needed] Towards the end of the summer, Larson also joined the Teen People's Rock 'n Shop Tour. "Whatever" was announced to be her intended second single, but was cancelled.
After her album had been pushed back numerous times, her record label released Finally Out of P.E. - The DVD on May 24, 2005, featuring her music video for "She Said" and the 'Making of the Video' plus her Sessions@AOL performances. Her debut LP, Finally Out of P.E., was finally released on October 18, which has sold 3,500 copies in United States.[19]
Larson released a follow-up single, "Life After You". The song debuted on AOL's Kids Online on June 27. She also sang the end credit track in the movie Barbie and the Magic of Pegasus. A music video featuring Larson performing the song appears as a bonus feature on the movie's DVD.[citation needed]
2006–2007
In 2006, Larson co-wrote and performed a song on the original soundtrack for the film Hoot, "Coming Around". The soundtrack entered in the Billboard 200.[citation needed]
On March 1, 2006, Larson performed an acoustic set of new songs at L.A.'s famous Viper Room.[20] New material included "Dear Universe", "Powershift", "Stilts and the Titanic", and "Superstition". Larson also performed "Falling Into History" a track from her debut album, and "Closer to Fine" - a cover of the Indigo Girls song. "Stilts and the Titanic" was later released as a demo version on Larson's Official Myspace in the summer 2006.[citation needed]
2008–present
Larson announced on October 22, 2008 to fans via her official Myspace blog that she will be recording a 5 track EP with new material,[21] and will provide backing vocals for artist Caitlin Crosby's latest album.[22] Larson's EP will include a re-recorded version of Ugly, a track from her debut album, and new songs titled "Dear Universe" (previously performed at Larson's Viper Room show in March 2006), "Sharpen My Nails", "Arielle", and "If All Goes Well".[23] She performed "Black Sheep" along with the band Metric in the film Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.[24] In 2010, Larson has started her own Indie record label as well using the name "Big Brass Stacks" which is also the name of her online store.[citation needed]
