It is situated in central Romania, in the historical region of Transylvania. The commune is composed of six villages: Apoş, Bârghiş, Ighişu Vechi, Pelişor, Vecerd, and Zlagna. Pelişor has a fortified church.
Bârghiş has a population of about 2,146, of which 1,722 are Romanians, 117 Hungarians, 285 Roma, and 21 Germans.
