Joe Sample created the chorus based on Impromptus, D. 899 by Franz Schubert, a 19th century composer.
The song peaked at number two on the UK Top 40 in September 1980[1], and was the 25th biggest selling single there in that year.
The song was covered by Nicole Kidman in the movie Moulin Rouge! The Dutch symphonic metal band After Forever covered the song on their 2003 single "Exordium". Ruben Studdard released a cover of the song as a Wal-Mart-exclusive bonus track on his fourth album, Love Is.
The song is performed as an instrumental by Keith Jarrett and Charlie Haden on their 2010 album Jasmine (ECM 2165).
The opening bars of this song have also appeared on the 2010 Leaving Certificate Music Listening exam in Ireland, as an unprepared Aural Awareness excerpt on Q6.[2]
