Chelsea played in their first UEFA Champions League final against fellow Premier League rivals Manchester United, making it the first all-English final in the competition as well. After 120 minutes both sides were level with a goal each, Manchester United then won the penalty shootout 6-5 after Van Der Sar saved Anelka's penalty.Having finished the season trophy less for the first time in three years was the impetus that led to
Avram Grant being sacked, three days after the Champions League final, onMay 24th .
