Campbell started his career at Aston Villa as a trainee, but was not offered a professional contract. He went on to play for non-league sides Chesham United, Stevenage Borough, Billericay Town and Yeading.
He had a hugely successful spell at Yeading, and his skills were showcased in the 2005
FA Cup against Newcastle United in a game which was televised onBBC One . This prompted Brentford manager Martin Allen to sign him for the League One club for £5,000.Campbell scored two goals to lead Brentford to victory over Premiership side Sunderland in the 4th round of the FA Cup on
January 28 ,2006 .Birmingham City F.C.
Three days later he was sold to Birmingham for £500,000, the fee rising to £1.1 million depending on appearances, goals, and whether Birmingham avoided relegation. He made his Premiership debut as a substitute on
February 4 ,2006 , playing the final 20 minutes in a 2-0 defeat to Arsenal. He scored his first goal at his new club against Colchester onAugust 5 ,2006 , which Birmingham won 2-1.Leicester City F.C.
On
20 July 2007 , Campbell signed a four-year contract with Championship side Leicester City for an initial fee of £1.6 million, which could rise to £2.1 million. Leicester reportedly beat off competition from Watford for his signature.
