Northwest University of Politics and Law (Chinese: 西北政法大学)is a university in Xi'an one of the old law institutions in China. The university serves as the educational center of law in the northwest part of China and as one of the key bases of law institutions of higher learning in China.
The university, originally known as Northern Shaanxi School of Politics and Law when it was set up in 1937, got its present name in 1958. Located in the ancient city of Xi’an, the university is a school with elegant scenery and convenient transportation. The students are mainly selected from 31 provinces, state-jurisdictional municipalities and autonomous regions and partly from Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan.
There are 18 majors offered by 9 departments. The university has an enrollment of more than 16,285 students. It also has a postgraduate school, adult education college and vocational college. The school is fully accredited at a 3-year master level in 12 subjects. These subjects include: civil law, criminal law, economic law, international law, the history of legal system and so on. The registered postgraduates so far number more than 1000.
The university has 517 teachers, including 104 professors and 213 associate professors, 37 experts and 24 model teachers respectively at national, provincial and ministerial level.
The library collection contains 1,350,000 volumes of books and more than 2,000 types of foreign and domestic periodicals. The university journal Law Science extensively circulated both at home and aboard, is recognized as one of the core periodicals in the legal field in China.
The university adheres to an opening-door policy and has an established intercollegiate relationship with universities in such countries as the United States, Japan, Russia and Germany. Active academic exchanges are being carried on regularly between the universities.
The University has acclaimed an area of 1078 Mu to build new campus in Chang'an University City, hoping to finish construction within 3–5 years. With the construction area of 420,000 square meters, the new campus can hold more than 20,000 students to study and live.
