Goshawk class minesweeper : built in 1919 as the steel hullfishing trawler "M/V Penobscot" by theFoundation (Marine) Co.,Savannah, Georgia , for Mr. W. F. Henningsen,Seattle, Washington ; acquired by theU.S. Navy 3 September 1940 and began conversion to a Coastal Minesweeper, AMc-4 at theWinslow Marine Corp.,Winslow, Washington ; renamed Goshawk16 October 1940 ; reclassified as a Minesweeper, AM-79,25 November 1940 ; commissioned USS Goshawk (AM 79),3 March 1941 ; conversion to minesweeper completed20 March 1941 ; reclassified as anUnclassified Miscellaneous Auxiliary, IX-195,10 October 1944 .World War II North Pacific operations
After shakedown, "Goshawk" took up minesweeping duties in
Puget Sound and theSan Juan de Fuca Straits , operating out ofSeattle, Washington . She sailed forAlaska 6 October 1941 and swept the channels betweenSitka ,Ketchikan ,Adak ,Seward , andKodiak Island until30 March 1942 , when she returned toSeattle, Washington , for extensive refitting. "Goshawk" resumed duty18 August in theSeattle, Washington , andPuget Sound area and in late 1943 returned toAlaska as a combination minesweeper and small cargo vessel. Her classification was officially changed to IX-195,10 October 1944 . USS Goshawk returned to Seattle9 June 1945 and decommissioned there1 August , but continued to perform in an "in service" status, transporting condemnedammunition for the13th Naval District .Decommissioning
"Goshawk" was decommissioned
1 August 1945 atSeattle, Washington , and placed in service; transferred to theMaritime Commission for disposal,7 May 1946 ; struck from theNaval Register 3 January 1946 ; sold to Alvin T. Davies ofTacoma, Washington , and renamed "M/V Bering Sea". Fate unknown.References
