Nine ships of the
Royal Navy have been named "Mary Rose". The first is thought to have been named after Mary Tudor, sister of KingHenry VIII of England , and therose , the symbol of theTudor dynasty . Later "Mary Roses" are named after the first.*"
Mary Rose " was a 60-guncarrack launched in 1509. She was rebuilt in 1536, but sank in a battle against the French in theSolent in 1545. She was raised in 1982 and is preserved inPortsmouth .
*HMS "Mary Rose" was a 39-gungalleon launched in 1556. She participated in the battles against theSpanish Armada in 1588, was rebuilt in 1589 and broken up in 1618.
*HMS "Mary Rose" was a 26-gun ship launched in 1623 and wrecked in 1650.
*HMS "Mary Rose" was a 32-gun ship, possibly a hired merchant vessel, in service between 1650 and 1654.
