Slocomb is a city in Geneva County, Alabama, United States. It is part of the Dothan, Alabama Metropolitan Statistical Area. At the 2000 census the population was 2,052. The community is named after postmaster, Frank W. Slocomb.

Slocomb calls itself the "home of the tomato." Their school mascot is the "Redtop". (Slocomb High School)

Slocomb is located at coor dms|31|6|31|N|85|35|40|W|city (31.108541, -85.594307)GR|1.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 9.5 square miles (24.6 km²), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 2,052 people, 856 households, and 590 families residing in the city. The population density was 215.9 people per square mile (83.3/km²). There were 963 housing units at an average density of 101.3/sq mi (39.1/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 72.81% White, 24.61% Black or African American, 0.73% Native American, 0.05% Asian, 1.17% from other races, and 0.63% from two or more races. 2.83% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 856 households out of which 30.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.4% were married couples living together, 14.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.0% were non-families. 29.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 15.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.40 and the average family size was 2.93.

In the city the population was spread out with 25.2% under the age of 18, 6.6% from 18 to 24, 27.0% from 25 to 44, 22.9% from 45 to 64, and 18.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 91.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.6 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $22,113, and the median income for a family was $29,583. Males had a median income of $25,962 versus $21,250 for females. The per capita income for the city was $12,772. About 20.6% of families and 23.8% of the population were below the poverty line, including 32.1% of those under age 18 and 29.5% of those age 65 or over.
