He founded the investment advisory firm First Manhattan in 1964.[3][5]
He began a friendship with Warren Buffett in 1962.[3] He was an early investor in Berkshire Hathaway and today owns 19,000 shares, worth $2 billion in 2007.[3] He joined the Berkshire Hathaway board of directors in 2003.[3]
Personal life
He lives in Rye, New York with his wife, Ruth, to whom he has been married for over sixty years. Together, they have three children and seven grandchildren. He is an avid swimmer.[6] Since the New York Giants Super Bowl XLII victory over the New England Patriots in 2007 he has become an avid fantasy football player. He has won his personal league two out of three years.[citation needed]
He is the son of Benjamin Gottesman and Esther Garfunkel.[4] He is a nephew of Samuel Gottesman.
