Snead is a town in Blount County, Alabama, United States. At the 2000 census the population was 748.

Geography

Snead is located at 34°6'57.492" North, 86°23'29.443" West (34.115970, -86.391512)GR|1.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 5.5 square miles (14.1 km²), of which, 5.4 square miles (14.1 km²) of it is land and 0.04 square miles (0.1 km²) of it (0.37%) is water.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 748 people, 342 households, and 219 families residing in the town. The population density was 137.5 people per square mile (53.1/km²). There were 388 housing units at an average density of 71.3/sq mi (27.5/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 99.47% White, 0.27% Asian, and 0.27% from two or more races. 0.53% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 342 households out of which 21.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.8% were married couples living together, 7.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.7% were non-families. 33.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 17.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.19 and the average family size was 2.74.

In the town the population was spread out with 18.9% under the age of 18, 6.4% from 18 to 24, 24.9% from 25 to 44, 26.7% from 45 to 64, and 23.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 45 years. For every 100 females there were 81.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 78.5 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $25,240, and the median income for a family was $33,000. Males had a median income of $26,667 versus $17,188 for females. The per capita income for the town was $13,822. About 6.2% of families and 11.0% of the population were below the poverty line, including 5.9% of those under age 18 and 20.2% of those age 65 or over.
