History

Snead State was founded in 1898 as Boaz Seminary. Classes were first held in the home of the E.B.L. Elder family, but quickly grew. By 1906, a Boaz businessman, John H. Snead had donated time, energy, money, and land to the seminary. In his honor, the school was renamed John H. Snead Seminary.

In 1935, Snead State College was chartered by the state of Alabama and began to function as a junior college. Snead State College was accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools in 1941. In 1967, the college was brought under the control of the Alabama State Board of Education and was renamed Snead State Junior College. In 1992, the name of the college was once again changed to reflect the role that the college serves in the community. Today, Snead State Community College, serves more than 3,000 students from all over northern Alabama as well as surrounding states.
