Orphan gene

An orphan gene is a gene that has limited phylogenetic distribution. In other words, there is no detectable homolog in other organisms or the homologous genes are restricted to closely related organisms.

In bacterial literature, orphan genes are also referred to as ORFans, a play on open reading frame.
