(1992)"I'm Your Baby Tonight" is the third
studio album by American pop/R&B singerWhitney Houston . Released in November 1990, the album peaked at #3 on the Billboard 200 Albums Chart, went on to be certified 4x platinum in the United States, and spun two number-one hit singles – the title track and "All the Man That I Need ", a Top 10 hit– Miracle, and a Top 20 -"My Name Is Not Susan ". This album also had a Japanese version which featured the tracks "Higher Love" (Steven Winwood Remake), and "Takin a Chance". "Takin a Chance" went to No. 1 in Japan.Following the run of this album, Houston continued to achieve widespread commercial success throughout the 1990s, venturing heavily into films—while continuing to record via their adjoining soundtrack albums. Subsequently, "I'm Your Baby Tonight" wouldn't be followed up with another studio album until 1998's "
My Love Is Your Love ".Current sales of this album stand at 10 million.Production history
With Clive Davis choosing most of the material for her previous albums, Houston was given more control this time in production and choosing producers and material. As a result, Houston took a more R&B sound featuring productions and collaborations with Babyface & LA Reid, Stevie Wonder, and Luther Vandross. This also allowed to singer to answer the critics who complained she was selling out with crossover pop music. The album is a mixture of uptempo rhythim new jack swing and slow jams. Houston arranged and co-produced "I'm Knocking" with her tour musical director Rickey Minor, her first in that role. Though the album was set for an early 1990 release, it was pushed back until November.
Reception
The album debut at #22, eventually peaking at #3 on the Billboard Top 200 album charts. It remained on the charts for 51 weeks and was eventually certified 4x platinum in the US. It has 10 million copies worldwide. Sales were aided by the first two singles "I'm Your Baby Tonight" and "All The Man That I Need" both topping the Hot 100 and the R&B charts. This made her the female artist with the most #1s at the time surpassing Madonna.
