Alcoholic polyneuropathy is a
neurological disorder in which many peripheralnerve s throughout the body malfunction simultaneously (a "polyneuropathy ").Alcoholic polyneuropathy usually has a gradual onset with usually more sensory than motor symptoms, usually with the involvement ofleg s more than thearm s.There is usually symmetric sensory loss, and painfulparesthesia s, though all sensory modalities may be involved.Patients also see distal weakness, muscle wasting, and decreased or absentdeep tendon reflex es.Treatment includes
vitamin supplementation (especiallythiamine ), nutritional support,NSAID s, andtricyclic antidepressant s ("e.g.",amitriptyline ).Physiotherapy is also a part of treatment.Recovery is slow, and usually happens over weeks to months.ee also
