Career
Schatzberg was born to a Jewish family of furriers and grew up in the Bronx.[1] He photographed for magazines such as Vogue, Esquire and McCalls.[2] He made his debut as a feature film director with 1970's Puzzle of a Downfall Child starring Faye Dunaway.[3] He went on to direct films such as Scarecrow,[4] which shared the grand prize at the 1973 Cannes Film Festival,[5] The Seduction of Joe Tynan,[6][7] Honeysuckle Rose with Willie Nelson, Misunderstood (based on a novel by Florence Montgomery), Street Smart in 1987, and The Panic in Needle Park, which starred Al Pacino.[8][9][10]
He was a member of the jury at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival.[11]
As a still photographer, one of Schatzberg's most famous images was the cover photo of the Bob Dylan album Blonde on Blonde, released in 1966.[12] A collection of Schatzberg's images of Dylan was published by Genesis Publications in 2006, titled Thin Wild Mercury.[2] Schatzberg still resides in New York City, where he is working on several film projects, including a sequel to "Scarecrow," co-written with Bruce Springsteen's [1] former Publicist, Seth Cohen [2].
Personal life
In 1968, Schatzberg was divorced in Cd. Juárez, Mexico, by Corinne Schatzberg, his wife of 18 years, on grounds of incompatibility.[13] They had two children together. At the time of the divorce, Schatzberg was widely known as Faye Dunaway's fiancé.[13][14] In 1969, Dunaway left Schatzberg for actor Marcello Mastroianni.
