In response to the increasing needs of European travelers to this southern Red Sea destination, along with many other airports in the Red Sea such as Sharm el-Sheikh International Airport in Sharm el-Sheikh, Marsa Alam is recently home to this new international airport. It was inaugurated on October 16, 2003.
The Marsa Alam International Airport is privately owned and operated by EMAK Marsa Alam for Management & Operation Airports, a subsidiary of the M.A. Al-Kharafi Group of Kuwait. Marsa Alam International Airport is managed by Aéroports de Paris.

Currently, the airport can accommodate 600 passengers per hour. In the future, the airport will able to process up to 2500 passengers per hour.[citation needed]
