The airline was established in the end of 1965 as Transavia Limburg. The name was changed in 1966 to Transavia Holland and it began operations on
17 November 1966. In 1986, the name was changed to Transavia Airlines. It was the first airline to take advantage of the first open skies agreement signed between the UK and Dutch governments. Transavia started operating its first scheduled service on the Amsterdam to London Gatwick route on26 October 1986.During 1991, the airline's major shareholder, Nedlloyd, sold its 80% holding to
KLM . In 1998, Transavia was the first foreign airline to operate domestic services inGreece following a change in Greek aviation law. In June 2003, KLM acquired the remaining 20% of Transavia, making it 100% KLM owned. The subsequent merger ofAir France andKLM made Transavia a wholly-owned subsidiary of Air France-KLM.In the early 2000s, Transavia was primarily a charter airline with a
low-cost airline subsidiary called Basiq Air. To strengthen its brand, Basiq Air and the Transavia charter arm were combined under the transavia.com name on1 January 2005 .Transavia chose
Eindhoven as its third base, afterAmsterdam andRotterdam , and will base a Boeing 737-800 there from November 1st, 2006. It will operate 5 weekly flights toAlicante andMálaga as well as 2 weekly flights toFaro . Transavia has a French unit, based at Paris-Orly. To date no fatalities or complete loss of aircraft occurred related to Transavia flights. In
1997 two incidents occurred with substantial damage to the planes:
*OnFebruary 8 the push/pull rod of the elevator broke off in flight damaging theBoeing 737 rudder and an emergency landing was made atNuremberg Airport . No fatalities, but theFAA issued anAirworthiness Directive after this and a similar incident. *OnDecember 24 of the same year aBoeing 757 returning fromLas Palmas toAmsterdam Airport Schiphol was seriously damaged during landing. The aircraft landed in strong, gusty winds and touched down hard with right maingear first. On touchdown of the nosewheel the nosegear broke out of the doghouse. After gliding overrunway 19R for aprox. 3 km. it came to rest in the grass beside the runway. Serious damage was inflicted on some electronic systems and control-cables. *OnAugust 26 2008, a boeing 737-800 with flightnumber HV207 fromRotterdam toBodrum did not take-off after an anonymous phone call was made stating certain passengers aboard the aircraft were planning to hijack the plane or take hostages. The aircraft in question was a Boeing 737-800 that was scheduled as flight HV207 to take off for Bodrum at 3:20 p.m. with 114 passengers aboard.References
